Boiler On The Edge? Retrofits May Do For Now, But Weigh These Factors Before Deciding

Upgrading your home’s boiler system often means better energy efficiency, but it’s important that you weigh several factors before deciding. An older boiler may cost you more to run and require significant repairs, not to mention it may not be safe to operate. Upgrading to a new boiler system often nets a good return on investment, especially if your existing system meets one or more of these criteria:

    • Age – Many boiler systems can last 15 years, maybe more. If your system is nearing this age, it may be time to consider a replacement, particularly if you also identify with the other factors listed here.
    • Energy costs – Higher energy bills may be a signal that the boiler is no longer efficient. Combined with age-related factors, homeowners with an inefficient system and high energy bills often benefit significantly from upgrading, due to technological advancements utilized in new, high-efficiency condensing boilers. Installing such a system in your home will result in lower energy bills, and possibly improved comfort too.
    • Safety – Over time, as boiler components begin to fail, the safety of the system may become questionable. If you haven’t kept up with regular maintenance for the system, your boiler may be on the brink of failing to operate at the right pressure, and the built-in safety components may no longer be operational.
    • Repairs – Living with an  older, inefficient boiler system often means recurring and possibly costly repairs. At some point, you’ll need to consider the value of repairing a system that doesn’t perform, against the costs — and benefits of — upgrading to a new, durable boiler.
    • Location – If you’re planning on staying in your home for awhile, you may be content to live with an older boiler; however, if you plan on selling your home, investing in a new system will increase the value of your home, and attract potential buyers.

If your boiler is on the edge, consider the cost benefits of upgrading to a new, high-performing system that will operate well for years to come, and lower energy bills considerably. For more information, contact the experts at Wolff Mechanical! Serving the Phoenix Valley area.
