HVAC Contractor Interview: Start With These Questions

Since the seasons in the Phoenix Valley can be quite temperamental, it’s important that you find the right HVAC contractor to take care of the heating and cooling needs of your home. It all starts with knowing the right questions to ask. We suggest that you start with these:

Does the Contractor Meet the Right Qualifications?

There are certain requirements, depending on local and state policies, of licensing, bonding and insurance, that a contractor must meet in order to be in business. In addition, ask if they are a part of a contractor association such as Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA). To see any of this documentation, all you need to do is ask.

Are Their Technicians Certified by NATE?

The non-profit organization known as North American Technician Excellence (NATE) is a third-party nonprofit certification organization for HVAC industry professionals. To gain certification, technicians must pass a series of rigorous, industry specialized tests. We suggest that you only trust a contractor that employs NATE-certified technicians.

Do They Have an Adequate Staff?

When you have a problem with your heating or cooling equipment, you want to be sure that you won’t have to wait too long in order to get it serviced. Another concern is an adequate staff in their office so that your calls don’t go unanswered.

Will They Supply You with a List of References?

It’s impossible to exaggerate the importance of obtaining a list of references from a potential contractor. The best course of action is to ask for a list of references with the last name beginning with a letter of your choice. Once you have the list, call each one and ask about their individual experience with the contractor.
