Insulating The Garage: Why This Job Is A Must-Do

It’s a simple fact: If you insulate your home, you’ll pay less to heat and cool it. Here in Central Arizona, with our cooling season lasting for most of the year, that advice is second nature to most homeowners. We insulate our living spaces, but what about that often-enormous space where we park, work and play? There are several reasons why insulating the garage is also a must-do job. Heat Transfer

Most garages, at the most, have only one wall shared with the main house. They could have roof pitches exposed to direct sunlight all day. If this is the case, massive heat can build up inside. Without an effective thermal break, that heat can transfer to the inside of your home, increasing the work your cooling system has to do. Increased work translates directly to increased energy and/or fuel spending.

Any measure that reduces heat entry is a priority. If the garage roof has a peak and eaves, with an attic space, it should be possible to gain entry above the ceiling to install blown-in – or  fiberglass batt – insulation, just as is present in the house’s attic area. Where the roof is visible, with no ceiling below it, simply attach high-R-value foam board between the joists. Closed-cell spray foam can also be applied by specialist companies to great effect.

A Cautionary Note

Carbon monoxide, most commonly encountered in vehicle exhaust fumes, is a killer. Other gases generated in garages used as workshops can also be detrimental to your family’s health. Proper sealing of the garage space from your living space is thus extremely important. Some builders use the cavity wall between the two spaces as a return air duct for the HVAC system, which is clearly a bad idea. When insulating such walls, you’ll need to call in a competent heating and cooling contractor to reroute that air flow.
