The Landscaping Around Your Phoenix Home Can Help Your HVAC System

One key to reducing your monthly utility bills lies just outside your front door. The landscaping around your Phoenix home is one component of a comprehensive strategy that can reduce your home energy costs. If you select suitable plants and site them strategically, they can work in tandem with your HVAC system.

To reduce your heating costs in winter:

    • Plant evergreen trees and shrubs on the windward side of your house. If you plant a hedgerow instead of widely spaced individual plants, the hedge acts as a screen that directs wind off around the sides of — or up and over — your home.
    • Plant deciduous trees that allow the sun’s heat to reach your home through limbs that drop their leaves in autumn.

To reduce your cooling costs in summer:

    • Plant tall trees that provide the landscaping benefit of shade, particularly on the western side of your home when the afternoon sun is harshest.
    • Clear all landscaping at least five feet around your A/C’s outside unit. An A/C compressor must have adequate ventilation to work most efficiently. If plants around your unit are overgrown, prune them before turning on your A/C for the first time each season when it’s time for seasonal HVAC maintenance.

These small tips can make a big impact on your monthly utility costs. Using plants as a natural resource allows you to dial your thermostat to a cooler setting in the winter and a warmer setting in the summer. If you use native plants, which are adapted to Arizona’s soil and climate, you’ll also reduce your water consumption.
