Your Furnace Smells — Why And What To Do About It

Have you ever turned on your furnace and noticed a musty odor or a burning smell? Finding what makes your furnace smell can be as simple as changing your furnace filter, but it can also require servicing your Phoenix home’s heating system.

There are several different smells you might experience when first turning on the heat, from a musty odor to a burning smell. A musty smell may indicate that there’s mold trapped in your furnace humidifier filter or in the furnace filter. This can happen when you haven’t used your furnace in awhile. Changing your furnace air filter may also take care of the furnace smells.

If you notice a burning smell when you turn on your furnace, this might indicate that dust and dirt have collected on the heat exchange and duct work. This is normal and will burn off in a short time and the smell will disappear in a few hours.

You’ll also want to check your registers and duct work to make sure no objects have fallen through. If you still smell a burning odor, you may need to have a specialist service your furnace. If you have an oil burning system and notice a smoke or oil smell, you may need to change the filter. Oil furnaces have filters just like gas furnaces do.

If you’ve checked and changed your air filters and still notice an odd smell, contact Wolff Mechanical, Inc today for a different solution.

Our goal is to help educate our customers in the Phoenix Valley area of Arizona about energy and home comfort issues (specific to HVAC systems).
