Ways To Reduce Dust In Your Home And Improve Indoor Air Quality

If you’re allergic to dust, you know how important it is to keep up with household chores. Textile fibers, dead skin cells, dust mites and pet dander comprise household dust, one of the most common indoor allergens. Use these tips to reduce dust and improve indoor air quality in your Central Arizona home.

    • Keep the floor clean: Vacuuming, sweeping and mopping are your best defenses against dust settling on the largest surface in your home: the floor. Choose a vacuum with strong suction, a powerful agitator and a HEPA filter to pick up as much dust as possible and prevent spitting it back out through the exhaust.
    • Clean the air while vacuuming: Even the best vacuums send dust swirling into the air; the agitating action makes it impossible not to. Fortunately, you can counter the dust storm by changing the thermostat from “auto” to “on” while you vacuum. Leave the setting like this for 15 minutes after you’re done to send airborne dust to the media air filter where it’s trapped for good.
    • Upgrade the HVAC air filter: Basic air filters trap just enough dust to keep from damaging the HVAC equipment. Upgrade to a higher efficiency filter to promote better indoor air quality.
    • Run air cleaners: One in every room cleans the air very thoroughly. If you only purchase one, put it in the bedroom and run it while you sleep. Make sure you choose an air cleaner that doesn’t produce ozone, a known lung irritant.
    • Wash the bedding weekly: Your comfy bed is a dust trap. Plus, tossing and turning means you leave dead skin cells behind. Once a week, strip the bed and wash the sheets in hot water. Wash your comforter about once a month. Avoid buying dry clean-only bedding.
    • Tidy up the closet: Clothes shed fibers constantly, creating a dusty environment in the closet. Bag or box off-season clothing, keep shelves organized and pick items off the floor so you can vacuum easily.
