Heat Pump Problems? Easy Troubleshooting Tips To Try Before You Call For Help

Heat pump problems in the midst of a Phoenix Valley summer is a serious matter. Going without cooling for even a day is not an option. And neither is an unnecessary service call. Before you dial your local HVAC contractor’s number, there are a few actions homeowners can take to troubleshoot their heat-pump systems. Beyond these simple steps below, however, any other problems should be left to the pros.

Most basic heat pump problems are due to either trouble with the thermostat, a blown fuse or a tripped home circuit breaker. To troubleshoot these three simple problems, try these steps:

    • Make sure the thermostat is set to a temperature that’s higher than the indoor temperature reading by at least five degrees.
    • Check that the thermostat is set to cooling mode, not heating.
    • If the thermostat wasn’t installed correctly, the wiring can overheat, eventually frying the unit’s electronic components. This problem requires professional help.
    • Check the power to the unit. There should be two circuit breakers dedicated to the air handler and the condenser. If they’ve been tripped, reset them.
    • After resetting the breaker, if it trips another time as the heat pump ramps up, you likely have a short in the power system.
    • The heat pump will also have a flip switch located near the unit or directly inside the cabinet to the air handler. It should be in the “on” mode. If it’s off, flip the switch to on, and then wait several minutes to see if the air handler cycles on.
    • Check a few additional components that can hinder your heat pump from cycling on. To troubleshoot, try changing a dirty filter, checking that the individual room registers are in the fully open position, and gently cleaning the coils with a damp rag or garden hose.
