While running the heater is going to cost you money and there’s no way around spending a little, there are things you can do to cut energy bills around the house so you don’t go broke. Use this guide to help you reduce energy usage and keep a bit more of your hard-earned money in your pocket.
- Use a programmable thermostat. By using one, you’ll be able to let the temperature fall lower when you won’t notice, like when you’re at work or asleep under heavy blankets. The temperature can be set to come back up to a comfortable level during the hours you spend awake in your home.
- Improve the insulation in your home. Adding more insulation around your home will keep heat from escaping, which will allow you to run the heatless to stay warm. Start with a foam weather stripping around doors and windows that let drafts in.
- Switch to LED bulbs if you haven’t already. LED bulbs will save you a lot of money over incandescent bulbs in the long run, and they’re much better for the environment.
- Unplug electronics when they’re not in use. Some electronics commonly referred to as ‘vampire electronics’ use power even when they’re not on but remain plugged in. Anything with a standby light definitely does. To be safe, put electronics on a surge protector and flip the whole thing off when you aren’t in the room.
